April
has the big boss jitters as the new interns arrive and our favorite docs roll
into their fifth and final year of residency. The Chief has some words of wisdom.
He says, You all know what youre doing. Just dont kill anyone.
Its good advice and a funny line. What doesnt get a laugh is the news
he lays on Meredith. The board feels her actions in the Alzheimers trial
disgraced the hospital. Thats why Meredith Grey has been fired. An
unemployed man named Danny is feuding with his working wife Susannah. She angrily
exits their car. Moments later theres a rumbling sound. Then Susannah is
gone. Danny steps out of the car. More rumbling. Soon, Dannys gone, too.
Both have been swallowed up by a gigantic sinkhole. Their car flies downward,
too. Susannahs leg is stuck under the car. The sinkhole is still
extremely unstable, so Owen and Callie are tasked with talking Danny through the
impossible. They need him to amputate his own wifes leg. Danny is scared,
yet somehow he musters enough courage to begin the procedure. But there comes
a point where he cant continue. Its just too much to ask. Thats
why Owen risks his own life to go down into the sinkhole and finish the job. Alex
is hiding out at the sinkhole scene since hes persona non grata at the hospital.
He finds the hand of a young boy who has been buried alive. Alex is able to stabilize
him. The kid is transported to the hospital where Jackson has stitched up a gash
on his dads face. Did we mention young Dr. Avery is interested in plastics
now? As you may have guessed, Mark is pretty darn rough on him when he finds out.
Word of the Mer-Der separation gets back to the adoption counselor even though
Meredith tried to hide the news. She also failed to mention shed been fired.
Now a slew of red flags have been raised regarding Zolas adoption. Needless
to say, Derek is not happy with wife. Owen isnt happy with his wife either.
He has no idea that Cristina still hasnt had the abortion even though she
desperately wants to. Meredith gives him the scoop. Shes speaking as kid
who was raised by a mom who didnt want her. She knows that Cristina will
resent her child if she has one and that will ultimately destroy her. Clearly,
her words hit home with Owen. Teddy has been pretty darn giddy lately because
of all the earth-shattering sex shes been having with Henry. Earth-shattering
sex tends to put people in good moods. Teddy is now willing to teach Cristina
again. Theyll be getting back to basics, focusing on all the things Cristina
was able to gloss over because she was so brilliant right out of the gate. Sounds
like fun! Well, not for Cristina. Theres trouble in the OR when Bailey
almost performs a procedure on the wrong patient. There was a mix up on the big
board. Fortunately, Lexie suspected something was amiss just before scalpel hit
skin. Bailey stares ahead with daggers in her eyes. She believes the team needs
a Gunther. The woman with the amputated leg will serve that purpose well. Whats
a Gunther, you ask? We have no idea. But Im sure well find out soon
enough. With Derek in surgery, Meredith tries to find out the worst case
scenario from the adoption counselor. She fears they may take the baby away. The
social worker doesnt want to discuss the matter until Derek is there, too.
Meredith says shell go find him. Instead, she runs to get Zola. Meredith
looks completely unhinged as she carries the baby down a corridor. She mutters
softly, What did I do? What did I do? Were kind of wondering
the same thing right about now. Bailey and Callie are given the go-ahead
to do a Gunther, which is a team building exercise. The hospital does it when
folks arent working well together. Its named for a doctor who rose
up above his peers to take charge in critical situation. Cristina, April, Alex
and Jackson work Susannah, the women who was trapped in a sinkhole. Who will the
Gunther be? Guess well just have to wait and see! There are many
complications during Susannahs surgery. Cristina appears to take the lead
in the quest for Gunther-dom. Shes doing well until she accidently gives
Alex an injection that stops his heart. Cristina brings him back, but is he ever
ticked. As for the patient, Jackson takes control of the situation. Hes
the Gunther. Meredith is MIA. She has baby Zola and shes not answering
her cell or pager. Eventually, she calls Cristina for help. They need a plan as
to how to explain Merediths disappearance. Cristina ropes Alex into helping.
Hes more than willing, as he needs a way to get back into the good graces
of his friends. The three conspirators tell the adoption counselor that they
were simply giving baby Zola a checkup after some lab results showed some cause
for concern. The counselor is mildly skeptical, as is Derek. But he goes along
with the ruse. He also defends Meredith by saying Zola couldnt find a better
mother. All this may not be enough though. Red flags have been raised and Zola
is taken away. For how long? We have no idea. The Chief is planning to insert
a device into Henry pronto. The speed in which this development took place has
Teddy a bit on edge. He wants Bailey to watch the procedure. The fact that hes
asking someone of her stature to take part in the operation has Teddy even more
concerned. Bailey is also wondering why shes there. Shes completely
baffled when the Chief has her take over the entire procedure. Derek soon
learns the reason for the Chiefs odd behavior. Hes decided to take
the fall for Meredith by claiming hes the one who tampered with the Alzheimers
trial. Its not true, but it is enough to get Meredith her job back. Its
also enough to have him hand over all of his cure for diabetes research
to Bailey. Its her FDA trial now. A stunned Bailey accepts this great honor.
Owen reunites Susannah with her husband. He sees the love these two have
for each other. This guy was willing to cut off his own wifes leg to save
her. Owen knows Cristina would do the same for him. He also knows that she hasnt
yet had the abortion. The two of them finally have a heart-to-heart that ends
with Owen agreeing to be there for his wife during the procedure. Its not
easy for either one of them, but at least theyre going through it together. -
